Before the war ends Ernie is wounded and Chris contracts influenza. Helens husband is killed on the Western Front.

Helen and Chris meet in Weymouth. They decide to marry. The loss of Helen plunges Ernest into suicidal depression.In New Zealand Chris becomes a politician and writer. However following the death of her little girl Helen leaves with a wealthy arms dealer to America.Back in Dunedin Ernies depressive mental illness returns limiting his work as a painter.
